3 Days in the Mara

We arrived at the Sekenani Gate at the south east corner of the Mara a bit late around 21h00 on 16th Friday and slept at the gate. Next morning we set off for the Sand River camp site. No ablutions to speak of. We went for a game drive and saw a lot of general game and a herd of around 500 buffalo. The Sand River camp site is the closed border with Tanzania. Also had a good sighting of a pair of lions. We had an afternoon thundershower and found Mogster leaks !!! Will need to fix the roof in Nairobi.
Saturday we did a long game drive in the Mara Conservancy and a bit in the Mara Triangle. Again we saw a lot of general game including lion and hyena. We then tried to exit via the Musiara Gate in the north east. In the process we got hopelessly lost as there were too many tracks and our GPS would not set a proper route. We came across some guides in a car and hired a guide to take us via 2 hairy river crossings and 40 minutes to the gate. That is what you get for R500 !!!! On this drive we saw 20 hyena around one den. It was late and they were spread out so no pic. We then drove about an hour through very rural areas to Mara West our camp for the night. Paradise, toilets, showers a bar and very friendly staff.
On Monday morning we were going to leave for Nairobi but the view from our camp site and the giraffe, zebra and wildebeest around us changed our mind we stayed in the Mara for another day. What a good decision. We saw abundant general game and then near the Kenya / Tanzania border we must have seen 20 000 wildebeest grazing. This was wildebeest paradise. We had a nice lunch at the Mara Serena Hotel and then continued but no cheetah.
This evening back at Mara West and found the one bracket on our recovery locker broken. Back to bracket school for Tom. Will fix it in the morning in their very well stocked workshop. Then off to Nairobi.
